The Self-Care You're Missing 🥂💅🏽🫧 (And Why Bubble Baths Aren’t Fixing It)

Most of us have been taught that self-care is about escaping our lives or that it’s about surface-level fixes and pampering.

But real self-care?
Real self-care is about supporting yourself inside your life.

In this episode, we’re diving into the 8 areas of real self-care and how to identify what you actually need — instead of relying on quick fixes that don’t create lasting change.

Because sometimes you don’t need a break — you need boundaries.
Sometimes you don’t need rest — you need clarity.
Sometimes you don’t need pampering — you need support in a deeper area of your life.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why surface-level self-care often doesn’t work

  • The 8 areas of real self-care

  • How to identify where you're depleted

  • Why self-care is about building a life you don’t need to escape from

  • How to start supporting yourself in meaningful ways

If you’ve been trying to take care of yourself but still feel overwhelmed, drained, or disconnected… this episode will help you understand why — and give you a better path forward.

LETS DIVE IN 🖤

I want to start today’s conversation with a question:

Have you ever tried to take care of yourself and somehow still felt exhausted?

Maybe you:

  • Took the bath

  • Went for the massage

  • Bought yourself something new

  • Took a day off

  • Even worked out

And yet…

You still felt overwhelmed.
Still felt heavy.
Still felt like something was off.

And it’s confusing, right?

Because you're trying to take care of yourself. But something still isn’t working.

And I think the reason for that is simple.

Most of us have been taught that self-care is about escaping your life or that it’s about surface-level fixes and pampering.

But real self-care?
Real self-care is about supporting yourself inside your life.

And those are two very different things.

Because when self-care becomes escape:

  • We scroll to numb

  • We shop to distract

  • We binge to check out

  • We stay busy to avoid

And none of those things actually give us what we need. They just temporarily take us away from what’s hard.

But what if instead self-care was about asking a better question:

What do I actually need right now?

Because here's what I've realized:

Sometimes you don’t need rest — you need clarity.
Sometimes you don’t need a workout — you need connection.
Sometimes you don’t need a break — you need boundaries.

And when we give attention to the wrong area, self-care doesn’t actually work.

Which is why I want to introduce — or reintroduce if you’ve been around for awhile — one of my favorite frameworks: “The 8 Areas of a Well Rounded Self”

Because real self-care isn’t one thing.

It’s caring for your:

  • Mind

  • Body

  • Emotions

  • Relationships

  • Work

  • Environment

  • Money

  • Spirit & Connection to something bigger than you

And when one of those areas is depleted or ignored, you feel it.

Sometimes as burnout.
Sometimes as overwhelm.
Sometimes as disconnection.
Sometimes as a slump.

And the goal of real self-care is identifying where you’re depleted and tending to that area.

Not escaping your life, but building one you don’t constantly need to escape from. That’s the goal here, so let’s dive in. 🤍

The 8 Areas of Real Self-Care

I want to walk through these together. And as I do, chances are, you’ll recognize where you might be depleted.

1. Mental + Emotional Self-Care

This is caring for your thoughts, emotions, and inner world.

You might be depleted here if:

  • You feel overwhelmed

  • Your mind won’t slow down

  • You're emotionally reactive

  • You feel heavy or discouraged

  • You're constantly overthinking

And when we’re depleted mentally or emotionally, we often try to escape instead of process.

We scroll.
We distract.
We stay busy.

But what we actually need might be:

  • journaling

  • quiet reflection

  • honest conversations

  • therapy

  • prayer

  • emotional processing

Because sometimes the most powerful self-care is giving yourself space to process and feel the realness of being human.

2. Physical Self-Care

This is caring for your body and the one we’re probably most familiar with.

You might be depleted here if:

  • You're tired all the time

  • You're not moving your body

  • You're not fueling consistently

  • Your sleep is off

  • Your energy is low

And when we’re physically depleted, everything feels harder.

Your patience is lower.
Your motivation is lower.
Your emotional resilience is lower.

Sometimes what feels like:

  • laziness

  • lack of discipline

  • low motivation

Is actually physical depletion.

And what you might need is:

  • sleep

  • hydration

  • nourishment

  • gentle movement

  • sunlight

Sometimes the most powerful self-care is caring for your body first.

3. Professional / Purpose Self-Care

This is caring for your work, calling, and purpose.

You might be depleted here if:

  • You feel burned out at work

  • You feel unfulfilled

  • You feel stuck

  • You're overworking

  • You’re disconnected from purpose

And when this area is depleted, we often try to escape through:

  • distraction

  • scrolling

  • numbing

  • or even overworking as a way to prove our worth and value

But what you might actually need is:

  • boundaries

  • reassessing priorities

  • redefining success

  • exploring growth

  • making changes

Because sometimes self-care isn’t rest — it’s realignment.

4. Social / Relational Self-Care

This is caring for your relationships and connection. This could be your kids, your family, your partner, your friends.

You might be depleted here if:

  • You feel lonely

  • You feel disconnected

  • Your relationships feel surface-level

  • You're pouring into everyone else

  • You're not feeling supported

And when we’re depleted relationally, we often:

  • isolate

  • stay busy

  • distract ourselves

But what you might actually need is:

  • connection

  • meaningful conversation

  • time with people who see you

  • healthier boundaries

Because we weren’t meant to do life alone.

5. Recreational Self-Care

This is caring for joy, play, and fun.

You might be depleted here if:

  • Life feels heavy

  • Everything feels serious

  • You're always productive

  • You’ve stopped doing things for fun

And when we lose joy, life begins to feel exhausting. I’ve for sure felt this as adulting and responsibilities weigh more and more. Life just starts to get a little too serious, ya know?

What you might need:

  • hobbies

  • creativity

  • fun

  • play

  • trying something new

Sometimes self-care is simply letting yourself enjoy life again and have a little fun without any pressure to perform or prove.

6. Environmental Self-Care

This is caring for your surroundings. It could be your car, your home, your desk, your office, and even your social media feed. It’s essentially the environments we spend time in and asking ourselves if they fill us or drain us.

You might be depleted here if:

  • Your home feels chaotic

  • Your space feels cluttered

  • Your environment feels draining

  • Your surroundings don’t support your growth

Guys. Our environment impacts our energy more than you may realize.

Sometimes self-care looks like:

  • cleaning

  • decluttering

  • reorganizing

  • refreshing your space

  • unfollowing or curating your feed

Because when your environment shifts, your energy often follows.

7. Spiritual Self-Care

This is caring for your soul and sense of meaning. It’s connecting to a source bigger than you. A lot of times we get this twisted with religion and for some, that could be an awesome and really aligned space. But for others, that might be the universe, reconnecting with nature, getting back to bigger goals and a higher vision for the life you have.

You might be depleted here if:

  • You feel disconnected

  • You feel lost

  • You feel without direction

  • You're moving through life without intention

What you might need:

  • prayer

  • reflection

  • journaling

  • time in nature

  • quiet

  • church

This is about reconnecting to meaning and, for everyone, that is going to look different in different seasons.

8. Financial Self-Care

This is caring for your resources and relationship with money.

You might be depleted here if:

  • You avoid your finances

  • You feel stressed about money

  • You feel out of control financially

Sometimes self-care looks like:

  • checking your finances

  • creating a plan

  • reducing stress around money

  • having no spend days or 24 hour pause periods before purchases

Because financial stress impacts everything and the way you care for yourself financially will have a direct impact on how you move thru your day to day.

So — quick episode today and one that I love to return to time and time again.

If self-care hasn’t been working for you, it might not be because you're doing it wrong. It might be because you're caring for the wrong area.

Real self-care isn’t:

  • bubble baths

  • shopping

  • escaping

REAL SELF CARE IS Listening to what you actually need… and responding with intention.

And when you begin doing that —

You stop trying to escape your life and start building one that supports and fulfills you.

One best self choice at a time.

Alright friends. Until next time, keep taking care of you so you can love and serve from that overflow. I’ll see you next week on The Self Care Sisterhood Podcast. 🤍
