RECLAIM YOUR CALM: ✌🏼 Why Your Body Won't Let You Rest

Most of us are walking around way more activated than we even realize, friend. Overstimulated, over-caffeinated, under-rested, emotionally tapped out — running on fumes + just calling it normal. And then we wonder why we can't relax, why even when we finally sit down at the end of the day our body just won't settle. If that's you: you are not broken. There's an actual, physical reason for it — and that's what this episode is all about. We're reclaiming calm, and it's the exhale this whole month has been building toward. Bc once you know the world is bigger than you AND that you still matter in it, here's the gift waiting: you don't have to carry it all. You were never supposed to. LET'S DIVE IN. 🖤

Hey hey friend. Welcome back to The Self Care Sisterhood + welcome back to our RECLAIM YOUR SUMMER series. I'm so glad you're here.

So look where we've been this month. We started with wonder — remembering the world is so much bigger than us, and learning to feel beautifully small again. Then last week we reclaimed our light — bc even though we're small in the grand scheme of things, we still matter, deeply. Small in ego, infinite in worth. Both at the same time.

And today? Today we get the gift that those two have been building toward this whole time. Today we reclaim our CALM.

Bc here's the thing. Once you really believe the world is bigger than you — and that you still matter without having to prove it — there's this beautiful conclusion waiting on the other side: you don't have to carry it all. You were never supposed to. The weight you've been white-knuckling? You get to set some of it down.

So let's talk about how.

WHY WE CAN'T SETTLE

First I just wanna name something, bc I think SO many of us are quietly living here.

Most of us are walking around way more activated than we even realize. Overstimulated. Over-caffeinated. Under-rested. Emotionally tapped out. Running on fumes + just calling it normal. Living in this constant low-grade hum of "on" — and then wondering why we can't relax. Why even when we finally sit down at the end of the day, our body just... won't settle.

If that's you — friend, you are not broken. There is an actual, physical reason for it. And that's what today is all about.

Bc real calm — real self-care — it is NOT about treating yourself. It's not the bubble bath + the face mask + the glass of wine, ha. I mean, those are lovely. Nothing against a bubble bath. But that's not the deep thing.

Real calm is about TENDING to yourself. It's about understanding the signals your body is constantly sending you + actually learning to respond to them — with care, with rituals + routines that honor your body instead of just pushing through + ignoring her.

Bc that's what most of us do, right? Our body waves a little flag — "hey, I'm overwhelmed, I need a minute" — and we go "not now, I've got things to do," and we push right through. Over + over. Until we're completely depleted + we don't even know how we got there.

So reclaiming calm starts with listening. With tending instead of pushing.

YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

Okay so let's get a little nerdy for a second, bc once you understand this, you genuinely can't unsee it. And it changes everything.

Your nervous system is basically the control center for everything. Your energy, your emotions, your ability to rest, your ability to focus, even how SAFE you feel in your own body. It's running the whole show in the background.

And it has two main states. Stay with me, this is simple.

The first is your sympathetic state. That's your fight-or-flight. That's your "on." When you're in sympathetic, it feels like urgency. Your breathing goes shallow + fast. Your thoughts start racing. You feel restless, wound up, maybe anxious or overwhelmed. Your body is basically braced for impact.

And the second is your parasympathetic state. That's your rest-and-digest. That's your "safe." When you're here, it feels like presence. Your breathing goes deep + slow. Your thinking feels grounded. There's a relaxed stillness, an openness, an ease.

And here's the thing — we are MEANT to move between these two. That's healthy. That's how it's supposed to work. The problem isn't that we go into fight-or-flight. The problem is that so many of us get STUCK there. We're living in "on" mode basically all day, every day, and our body never gets the signal that it's safe to come back down. It never gets the reset.

So just a gentle check-in, + we go deeper on this in the workbook — where have you been living lately? In urgency + bracing + go-go-go? Or in groundedness + ease? Most of us already know the answer, ha.

THE STRESS CYCLE

Okay now here's the part I really want you to understand, bc this was a total lightbulb for me. It's called the stress cycle.

Here's the deal. Stress isn't JUST an emotion or a feeling in your head. When you get stressed, there is a whole lot happening physically in your body. And that physical process has a beginning, a middle, + an end. A full cycle. And it's actually meant to be completed.

So let me take you way back. Picture our ancestors. Back in the day, the thing that stressed them out was, like, a lion. A literal threat to their survival.

So the beginning of the cycle is — they spot the lion. They perceive the threat. The middle of the cycle is — their body floods with cortisol, adrenaline kicks in, and they either fight the lion or they run like heck back to the village. Their body is DOING the very thing it was built to do. And then the end of the cycle — they make it back safe, they're hugging their people, they're celebrating, and their body finally gets the message: we're safe now. It's over. The loop closes. The stress actually leaves the body.

Beginning, middle, end. Complete.

Now here's our problem. Today our lions are different. Our lion is the screaming toddler. The deadline at work. The traffic. The text that makes our stomach drop. The overflowing inbox. And here's the wild part — your body responds to ALL of that the exact same way it would respond to an actual lion. Same cortisol. Same adrenaline. Same fight-or-flight. Even when it's "just traffic." Your body genuinely cannot tell the difference.

BUT — we don't get to complete the cycle. We can't fight our boss or sprint away from traffic, ha. We just have to sit in it. Commute. Answer the email. Keep going. So the stressor comes, our body activates... and then the loop never closes. We never tell our body we're safe.

And so what happens? The stress just stays. It piles up. Even when the stressful thing is long gone, the stress itself is still sitting in your body bc you never finished the cycle. And we do this day, after day, after day — just stacking unfinished stress cycles on top of each other.

That, friend, is why you can be on vacation + still feel wound up. Why you can finally have a free evening + still not be able to relax. Your body is holding ALL of it bc nobody ever taught us we're supposed to actively close the loop.

HOW WE CLOSE THE LOOP

So here's the good news, + this is what I want you to walk away with. You don't need some giant life overhaul to fix this. You don't need to quit everything + move to the woods, ha. You just need simple, repeatable little rituals that send your body ONE message: you're safe now. You can relax. It's okay to come down.

THAT'S how you complete the stress cycle. That's how you reclaim your calm.

And the beautiful thing is, this can be so small. It's things like — a few slow, deep belly breaths, the kind that actually reach the very bottom of your lungs. A short walk without your phone. Gentle movement, a good stretch, literally shaking your body out. A really good cry, which yes, totally counts + is actually your body releasing. Laughing at something till you can't breathe. Snuggling your pet. A long hug with someone you love — like a real one, not a side-pat, an actual 20-second hold. Singing in the car at the top of your lungs. A warm shower to let your shoulders finally drop, or even just splashing some cool water on your face — there's real science there, it helps flip your body into that calmer gear. Putting your bare feet on the ground + just feeling held for a second.

None of that is complicated. None of it costs a thing. But every single one of those is a way of telling your nervous system the lion is gone. You made it. You're safe.

Now in the workbook, we take this even further — there's a full reset menu to pull from + space to actually build your own personal reset ritual, so you've got a go-to for the next time stress starts stacking up. We get really specific in there about making it YOURS. So I'll let you dig into that part on your own.

But even just starting today — pick one. One little loop-closer. And the next time you feel that stress pile starting to build, actually do it. On purpose. And watch what happens.

So here's what I want to leave you with, friend. And I want to zoom all the way out, bc look at what this whole month has actually been.

Wonder taught us the world is bigger than us — and that's not a threat, it's a relief. Light reminded us that even so, we still matter, deeply + inherently + on purpose. And now calm is the exhale after both of those. Bc if the world really is bigger than you... and your worth was never actually up for debate... then friend, you can finally stop trying to hold the whole thing up.

You don't have to carry it all. You were never built to. So much of that weight on your shoulders? It was never even yours to carry in the first place.

Your calm was never about doing more, or being more disciplined, or finally getting your whole life perfectly together. It's the exact opposite. It's about giving your body the one thing it's been begging you for this entire time — the signal that it's safe to set it down now. To rest now.

You've been carrying so much. Probably way more than you've even let yourself realize. And you're allowed to put some of it down. You're allowed to close the loop. You're allowed to feel steady + safe + grounded + home in your own body again.

That's not a luxury, friend. That's coming home to yourself. Which is what this whole summer has been about from the very beginning.

So this week — find your one little way to tell your body you're safe. And give yourself full permission to finally come down.

I am so proud of you for doing this work with me and literally thousands of other listeners all summer long. And next Monday, we're gonna pause + take a breath together — we'll reflect on everything we've reclaimed this month + get intentional about carrying it into the next one. What do we want to take with us? It's the perfect way to close out this chapter of the journey. So don't miss it.

Okay friend. I love you so much. I’m rooting for you always. And I’ll see you right here, next week, on The Self Care Sisterhood Podcast. 🤍
